November is Native American Heritage month, during which the Future Stewards program at RIT plans several events to celebrate their heritage and educate other RIT students about their culture. “Thanksgiving is an American holiday,” Jason Younker stated. Younker is the director of the Future Stewards program at RIT and a member of the Coquille tribe. “Giving has always been a cultural tenant of all Native Americans.

New Abortion Law in Texas According to BBC News, beginning November 1 one-third of Texas abortion clinics were barred from performing any abortions under a new law that has been passed. The law requires doctors performing abortions to have patient-admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. Federal District Judge Yeakel ruled on October 28 that the new abortion law in Texas was unconstitutional.
On October 30, the RIT Leadership Institute and Community Service Center ran “Gender Differences in Leading Globally,” which was a discussion-based event led by professional mentors from the Leadership Institute’s Global Leadership Program. This particular talk was centered on the challenges faced by different genders in pursuing and obtaining positions of leadership, with a focus on women.

NSA Accused of Spying on Europe Germany, Spain and other countries are claiming that the United States’ National Security Agency (NSA) has been spying on top officials and collecting metadata from ally country citizens. According to CNN, German newspapers are claiming that Chancellor Angela Merkel has had her personal cell phone monitored for over 10 years. Spain is accusing the NSA of spying on over 60.5 million Spanish telephone calls in a month.
On November 5 an election will be held for the position of Henrietta Town Supervisor. At time of printing, there are 8,118 Democrats and 7,244 Republicans registered to vote in the town of Henrietta, as well as 5,238 not associated with a political party. This comes to 20,600 voters total, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. The total number of students enrolled at RIT for 2013 is 18,292.
November has begun and people everywhere are putting down the razors to grow both facial hair and awareness for no-shave-November, also known as “Movember.” Even with all its publicity and participants, not many know the event’s origins.
Park Point residents were notified on October 16 that the corporation American Campus Communities (ACC) had purchased the property from the previous Rochester-based owners, Wilmorite Properties. ACC already owns The Province. According to the ACC website, “American Campus Communities is the nation's largest developer, owner and manager of high-quality student housing communities.”
At the November 1 Student Government (SG) meeting, the Center for Campus life provided a status update, bylaw changes were presented, the graduate senator selection was approved and a funding proposal brought by the Electric Vehicle Team was approved.
“Gender Gap,” a phrase usually defined as the difference between the male and female populations, is now being taken under the lens of college education, specifically in terms of college attendance and graduation. This gap that has been changing and expanding since the late 1970s has now begun to raise concerns and questions across American universities.
A man known for his flexography (rubber stamp printing) mastery, Timothy Richardson was a printing technologist at the Printing Applications Lab for RIT’s Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies. He recently passed away October 21 at the age of 51.
At the October 25 Student Government meeting, a progress report was presented explaining RIT’s sustainability growth compared to last year. SG also talked about changes to the bylaws concerning the requirements for SG Graduate senator.
Egyptian Police Teargas Student Protesters Egyptian police subdued approximately 100 supporters of former president Mohammed Morsi on October 20, according to Voice of America News. Following an altercation, bird shot and teargas were fired at students of the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, and about 44 students were arrested. On Monday, October 21 there was another protest at the campus involving 4,000 students, according to security sources.

RIT’s Toni Gauthier, clinical intake coordinator and master of social work at the Counseling Center, has begun investigating bad sleeping habits or difficulties falling asleep among students.
Henrietta will be hosting elections for its Town Supervisor on November 4 and 5. RIT students are encouraged to register to vote, even if they live permanantely out of state. If you are interested in registering for this election, be prepared to travel into the city. The mailing registration period for November’s general election ended on October 11. However, voters can still get the chance to register in person at the Board of Elections, located at 39 W. Main Street, Rochester.
Linda Keeney, director of communications for RIT’s Office of Development, passed away on October 9 due to illness. Working at RIT since 1994, she’s held a variety of positions.
The Henrietta Town Supervisor position is up for local election, and the two candidates, the incumbent Michael Yudelson and the GOP candidate Jack Moore, have the potential to greatly impact Henrietta residents and the RIT student population.
