Food options that RIT provides for vegan students are unsatisfactory. Although RIT is trying to change, it may not be enough to adequately support all of its students.
Message Center is a major source of broadly targeted emails at RIT. What can the university do to improve it?
Gamergate has sparked a lot of angry discussion on the internet. The main issue behind it can be traced back to game journalists. Too often, game journalists have very close relationships to the developers they are reviewing, and this leads to a number of problems -- most notably angry consumers.
An overview of what net neutrality means, how its demise will affect you and what you can do to keep it alive.
Last year, RIT students saw a major change in their schedules with the introduction of the semester system, replacing the beloved quarter system. Originally, the semester conversion was supposed to roll out in tandem with a change in the way RIT grades its students, but the grading system was delayed a year. Well, that delay time is up and the new refined grading system is in place for this academic year.
When I came to RIT in fall of 2011, I had no idea about the plus/minus grading transition. No one told me that it would be going into effect my senior year. No one told me that the new system would affect my final GPA. And in the end, no one gave me – a current student who is hugely affected by the policy – any say in the decision either.
The summer after my freshman year of college, I had what felt like a major existential crisis. I broke up with my long distance boyfriend, chopped off my hair, donated half of my belongings to Goodwill and decided that I would change my major. I basically laid around my room for two months thinking about life and what on Earth I was going to do with mine.
The RIT community has a very innovative and creative mindset that harbors the free flow of ideas. RIT Governance Policy C3.0, Intellectual Property Policy, navigates the tumultuous waters of intellectual property (IP). Fortunately for RIT students, policy C3.0 has their best interest in mind regarding possession of IP rights.
Free things are great—just don’t be an idiot. Don’t take free, opened candy from strangers, don’t click on an offer for a free trip to the Bahamas and don’t go hug the “Free Hug” guy standing on the corner. If people use common sense it isn’t usually too difficult to discern what is or isn’t smart to accept for free.
One of the most difficult things to do in life is to decline something that’s free. The hordes of people who take time out of their day to wait in lines for free FreezeFest gear, the number of events that hand out free food and the popularity of free t-shirts assure me that I am not alone in this belief. Although I will happily accept a free pen, hat or sweatshirt on occasion, I refuse to accept something that is being given to me for free based solely on my gender.
RIT does not hand out tenure willy-nilly. The requirements are intense, and moving through the ranks of faculty, or getting on the tenure track from a lecturing position is very challenging. Even with RIT’s rigorous criteria for tenure, there are those who believe the institution of tenure to be an outdated one. But in reality, we need tenure more now than ever before.
Each year, Reporter releases a special themed issue. This year, we wanted to focus on the important and timely issues of gender and sexuality. The social and legal acceptance of all forms of gender identity, sexual orientation and gender expression has become our generation’s civil rights movement. The purpose of The Gender and Sexuality Issue is to instill interest in and stimulate conversation about historically underrepresented and taboo topics that affect RIT and the community at large.
For those even remotely interested in records and record collecting culture, the concept of Record Store Day can seem like nothing short of a godsend. An annual corporate sponsored event every April 19, Record Store Day has grown substantially in size and stature since its 2008 inception: the first Record Store Day in 2008 only had less than a dozen special releases and by 2012 there were more than 400.
On January 31, Donna Rubin, assistant vice president for student wellness, and Mike Stojkovic, assistant director for wellness, presented a possible change to SG involving the current smoking policy at RIT. This new policy would ban the use of all tobacco products on university owned property.
I think if I hear the phrase “smokers’ rights” one more time, I might lose it. I just might. “Smokers’ rights” isn’t a thing. Smokers aren’t an underprivileged or oppressed group of individuals that need protecting. They’re people who choose to participate in a knowingly unhealthy habit.
“RIT firmly believes that among its goals and responsibilities are the free pursuit of truth and intellectual and moral development of its students...
Every candidate for office makes promises. In 2008, presidential hopeful Barack Obama promised health care and improved environmental protection: the first happened, the second did not.
Since “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” premiered in 1937, Disney has preached the same message to viewers: meet The One, fall in love and live happily ever after. Cinderella suffered until she was magically made beautiful, met her prince at a party and married him days later. This pattern continued for Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana and Rapunzel. To the impressionable mind of a young girl this sends a huge message.
When I considered leaving RIT housing, the first thing I did was pull up a copy of the RIT Housing Terms and Conditions for the 2013 – 2014 academic year. At no point did I call the Office of Housing Operations; I banked on my ability to interpret the housing contract, which in hindsight was not the best decision. Reading the contract from the beginning, the first section I came upon, section 1.05 “Contract Cancellation Dates” seemed to address my situation perfectly.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal.”
At the February 14 Institute Council meeting RIT’s budget for next year was broken down, the 10 year strategic plan was looked over, the 2015-16 school year calendar was evaluated and approved and progress of a new online class system was evaluated.
Last year the term “friend zone” was added to the Oxford Dictionary.
Put Some Thought Into It by Nicole Howley Dunder Mifflin Regional Manager Michael Scott once said in an episode of The Office, “Presents are the best way to show someone how much you care. It’s like this tangible thing you can point to and say, ‘Hey man, I love you this many dollars worth.’” Although I enjoy hearing the majority of Scott’s personal philosophies, our opinions diverge on this matter.
