According to Huffington Post, on September 28 the Mercer County Superior court in New Jersey lifted a ban on same-sex marriage. The new policy will take effect on October 21 this year, giving the state time to challenge the ruling. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has already expressed plans to take this course of action. New Jersey has been one of thirteen states within the U.S. to allow same-sex marriages. Part of the reasoning behind the push for legalization of same-sex marriage was that civil unions did not give couples the same benefits as a legally married couple, according to BBC News...

On September 4, RIT’s Public Safety lost one of its longest-employed service members, Mike Koziol, at the age of 57. After graduating RIT in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Mike continued to be a part of the RIT community by signing up and serving as a Public Safety officer for 32 years. Daniel Woods, a fellow officer and close friend for nearly 12 years commented, “He spent his whole adult life here and he loved it. He came in as a student and stayed ever since.”

After Erin Davies’s VW Beetle was vandalized due to the rainbow sticker displayed on the back bumper, she decided to take a 58 day trip around the country in the newly painted car to raise awareness of LGBT rights. She documented her travels in an award winning film and has been traveling around in her car (now covered entirely in vibrant rainbow stripes) to talk to groups all around the country. RIT mourns the passing of Janice Strine, coordinator for the NTID Athletic Support Team, and before that an educator at the Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD). Strine, or “Jan” as she liked to be called, touched the lives of students and faculty alike, leaving an impression that few ever do, and none will forget.

Strine taught physical education at RSD in the 1970’s where she also coached swimming and gymnastics. “It was amazing to me to see someone who went out of her way to make sure everyone had been involved,” Joe Hamilton, a former student of Strine’s at RSD commented. “She was always positive, and was always encouraging us. She never gave up until you nailed it...

On September 27, the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship hosted a survivor of sexual abuse to talk about her experiences and share how she was healed through her faith. This lecture was the start of a series of presentations to be given on topics ranging from sex trafficking to China’s one child policy. The speaker, an RIT alumnus, wished to remain anonymous in this publication.

The final 3 candidates for the position of Freshman Senator were Jill Petersen, an Industrial Design major, Tymoni Correa-Buntly, a Journalism major and Heetae An, an Engineering Exploration major. They were each given three minutes to present a speech and time was set aside afterwards for questions from senators and representatives. After ballots and votes were counted, Jill Petersen was elected the winner...

The question “Are you deaf?” became the question “Are you hearing?” the second I stepped into the Gordon Field House on September 21. I was greeted — in ASL — by the brothers of the Sigma Nu fraternity and the sisters of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority asking if I was registered as I tried to say that I could not sign at all. While in line, all instructions were communicated in ASL as I directed myself to the registration booth. Accompanied by two interpreters, I went on my way.

A new study that tested high school students’ rhythmic abilities showed that those lacking in reading and speaking skills had more difficulty keeping to the beat of music. According to CBS News, study author Nina Kraus stated that “rhythm is an integral part of both music and language.” Students who had musical training of some sort not only had significantly higher reading and speech capabilities in comparison with their peers, but also had “enhanced neural responses to speech sounds,” according to BBC News.
