Henrietta will be hosting elections for its Town Supervisor on November 4 and 5. RIT students are encouraged to register to vote, even if they live permanantely out of state. If you are interested in registering for this election, be prepared to travel into the city. The mailing registration period for November’s general election ended on October 11. However, voters can still get the chance to register in person at the Board of Elections, located at 39 W. Main Street, Rochester. Linda Keeney, director of communications for RIT’s Office of Development, passed away on October 9 due to illness. Working at RIT since 1994, she’s held a variety of positions. Keeney started as a marketing coordinator for Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies-Civil Engineering Technology Marketing Operations, according to RIT Message Center. She also worked as the associate director of annual giving in the Development and Alumni Relations Division and as the senior director of The Fund for RIT, which she has been a part of since 2001...

The Henrietta Town Supervisor position is up for local election, and the two candidates, the incumbent Michael Yudelson and the GOP candidate Jack Moore, have the potential to greatly impact Henrietta residents and the RIT student population.

During his six years in the position, Yudelson has worked to make the Henrietta Town Hall more transparent by creating a welcoming atmosphere in town meetings, revamping the town’s website and social media, as well as making it easier for the public to access records. For instance, the minutes for Town Hall meetings are now available online...

About a month ago, the President of Rochester City Council, Lovely Warren, carried a victory in the Mayoral Democratic Primary against the incumbent mayor, Thomas Richards. The margin of victory was 57 percent to Warren and 42 percent to Richards, according to the Rochester City Newspaper. There was a much lower voter turnout than was expected, with only 23 percent of registered voters participating. RIT Dining Services has recently instituted a policy that prevents workers from wearing any type of jewelry that could be harmful to the integrity of the food. For example, workers cannot have any dangling earrings, since they could fall off and land in the food, or wedding rings, since they could puncture the gloves and touch the food, thereby harming it. The policy also has rules peartaining to tattoos that might look unappealing or offensive to customers. This means that any obscene, racist or sexual tattoos must be covered up while working.

According to Huffington Post, on September 28 the Mercer County Superior court in New Jersey lifted a ban on same-sex marriage. The new policy will take effect on October 21 this year, giving the state time to challenge the ruling. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has already expressed plans to take this course of action. New Jersey has been one of thirteen states within the U.S. to allow same-sex marriages. Part of the reasoning behind the push for legalization of same-sex marriage was that civil unions did not give couples the same benefits as a legally married couple, according to BBC News...

On September 4, RIT’s Public Safety lost one of its longest-employed service members, Mike Koziol, at the age of 57. After graduating RIT in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Mike continued to be a part of the RIT community by signing up and serving as a Public Safety officer for 32 years. Daniel Woods, a fellow officer and close friend for nearly 12 years commented, “He spent his whole adult life here and he loved it. He came in as a student and stayed ever since.”

After Erin Davies’s VW Beetle was vandalized due to the rainbow sticker displayed on the back bumper, she decided to take a 58 day trip around the country in the newly painted car to raise awareness of LGBT rights. She documented her travels in an award winning film and has been traveling around in her car (now covered entirely in vibrant rainbow stripes) to talk to groups all around the country. RIT mourns the passing of Janice Strine, coordinator for the NTID Athletic Support Team, and before that an educator at the Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD). Strine, or “Jan” as she liked to be called, touched the lives of students and faculty alike, leaving an impression that few ever do, and none will forget.

Strine taught physical education at RSD in the 1970’s where she also coached swimming and gymnastics. “It was amazing to me to see someone who went out of her way to make sure everyone had been involved,” Joe Hamilton, a former student of Strine’s at RSD commented. “She was always positive, and was always encouraging us. She never gave up until you nailed it...

On September 27, the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship hosted a survivor of sexual abuse to talk about her experiences and share how she was healed through her faith. This lecture was the start of a series of presentations to be given on topics ranging from sex trafficking to China’s one child policy. The speaker, an RIT alumnus, wished to remain anonymous in this publication.

Although she originally intended to remain celibate until marriage, she began to feel as though her worth was based on what she could do with her body...

The question “Are you deaf?” became the question “Are you hearing?” the second I stepped into the Gordon Field House on September 21. I was greeted — in ASL — by the brothers of the Sigma Nu fraternity and the sisters of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority asking if I was registered as I tried to say that I could not sign at all. While in line, all instructions were communicated in ASL as I directed myself to the registration booth. Accompanied by two interpreters, I went on my way.

A new study that tested high school students’ rhythmic abilities showed that those lacking in reading and speaking skills had more difficulty keeping to the beat of music. According to CBS News, study author Nina Kraus stated that “rhythm is an integral part of both music and language.” Students who had musical training of some sort not only had significantly higher reading and speech capabilities in comparison with their peers, but also had “enhanced neural responses to speech sounds,” according to BBC News.
