Student Government (SG) reflected on Global Consortium, discussed Brick City Weekend and reviewed PawPrints during their Oct. 16 Senate meeting.
Global Consortium Reflection
Hassan Bodlah, Director of Partnership and Governance; Suprina Kabadkar, Accessibility Senator; Sarah Walton, Cross Registered Senator; and Brandon Gell, KGCOE Senator, presented their takeaways from Global Consortium.
Global Consortium is an event designed to connect SG members from all RIT campuses. This year, it took place on our main campus. SG welcomed SG representatives from the Dubai, Kosovo and Croatia campuses.
The major highlight of the event was a day trip to Niagara Falls. Bodlah noted that many global campus representatives were visiting the country for the first time, and that made the trip especially exciting.
Notably, SG members from the global campuses had little experience with Deaf culture. None of them had met a Deaf person before. Walton shared that although she was nervous to meet the global SG representatives because she was unsure how they would feel about her as a Deaf-American, she was pleasantly surprised by everyone’s kindness. She taught the global representatives the alphabet in ASL and was delighted to see them fingerspelling their names.
Meeting with SG members from the other campuses also motivated SG to improve their social media strategy. Bodlah said that SG Dubai’s use of social media to promote PawPrints is something that he wants main campus SG to emulate.
This year, SG is focusing more on delivering initiatives and stepping away from event-planning. They will only be hosting advocacy events. However, on the other campuses, SG is responsible for organizing events because they do not have a College Activities Board. Seeing how the other SGs organize events inspired main campus SG members to make their advocacy events more fun.
“The group of students we always reach are frustrated students…whereas the Student Governments globally reach a large population of their students just because they do a lot of fun events,” said Suprina Kabadkar, Accessibility Senator.
Director of Operations, Peyton Jesse, outlined expectations for Brick City Weekend.
PawPrints
Jameson Baker, Director of Student Relations, presented the week’s PawPrints.
“Ban professors from using AI for class materials” was charged to the Academics & Co-ops Committee. Academics & Co-ops does not currently have a Committee Chair.
Facilities Committee Chair, Rokhan Ahmadzai, gave an update on his active PawPrints.
According to Ahmadzai, the HUB Express will not be returning. At a meeting with Peter Briggs, RIT’s Director of Retail Operations, and Meghan McDonald, Director of HUB Print and Postal Services, he learned that the HUB closed due to poor performance. Ahmadzai requested the performance data so that he can publish it.
Ahmadzai shared that Environmental Health & Safety will be investigating the smoke detector placement in Mark Ellingson Hall.
Ahmadzai also reported that he has a meeting regarding mold in campus facilities with FMS and Environmental Health & Safety planned.
The meeting adjourned after an hour and twenty minutes.
