Reporter Statement: October Print Edition Concerns
by Reporter Editorial Board | published Oct. 9th, 2024
Reporter hears the concerns from the community regarding the most recent issue of the magazine. Our monthly issue for October was slated to be themed around student activism, which led to the inclusion of images taken from protests on our campus that represent this topic. However, we did not sufficiently clarify this intention for the magazine, which caused the appearance of bias, and for that we apologize sincerely.
We recognize that our choice of imagery and content lacked the sufficient context befitting such a sensitive subject. We also acknowledge that in this recent edition we fell short of our commitment to making our content clear and impartial. Topics such as this are difficult to talk about without creating active, and often controversial, conversations. However, we understand that the release date of this issue contributed to the one-sided appearance of the content.
Our intention was to document student activism on the RIT campus, and not to subscribe our readers to a specific stance. We believe in holding ourselves to the standards of professional journalists. In the future, we will strive to further include and consider all opinions and various perspectives. We understand that imagery carries deep meaning, and we believe that it is crucial to approach these matters with greater thoughtfulness and care. It is imperative that we, as a student-run organization, create an environment in which all individuals and communities feel respected and valued. Our editorial staff is committed to ensuring Reporter is a platform for understanding and informing the public, rather than dividing it.Your views and voices are essential to our community, and to our growth as an organization. We aim to host meaningful conversations both within our team and with our broader campus. Our goal is to listen to the diverse voices around us and learn from them.
Thank you for your understanding.
Signed,
