For many of us, Orientation Week is the first time we experience near-total independence. There are no parents to dictate what you can or cannot do. That freedom often leads us to seek out new experiences. Partying is normal and you should go to one if you want to, but it’s always important to stay safe.
Utilize the Buddy System
If you’re going to a party with a big group of friends, choose a friend to be your buddy for the night. You and your buddy should check in on each other throughout the party to make sure you’re both feeling good, staying safe and having fun. Make sure that you leave with your buddy unless it was explicitly communicated that one of you will be leaving with someone else. If you don’t have a buddy, you can always share your location with a trusted friend for the night so they can check on you.
Have Fun in Moderation
While enjoying yourself at a party is great, make sure that you partake in alcohol or substances in moderation. Excessive consumption of alcohol, especially if it’s your first time drinking, can be extremely harmful. Drinking isn’t for everyone and it’s okay if you don’t.
If you want to try cannabis, great! Remember your limits. If you’ve never smoked or tried edibles before, start small. Don’t get impatient to feel the effects and consume too much, because you’ll likely feel sick. If you’re trying edibles, know what dose you’re taking. Many edibles differ greatly in dosage, and everybody reacts differently.
Consent is Key
People cannot give informed and sound consent when under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Even if the night is going great and you’re both clicking, wait until you’re both sober before you try anything.
Know What You’re Consuming
Some parties may give out drinks, either for a low cost or for free, such as jungle juice. Keep in mind that you don’t know what’s in the drink. You also don’t know how much alcohol is in it, so drink in moderation if you’re going to drink it, and don’t drink too much in a short amount of time.
If you’re bringing your own drinks, keep them covered or keep an eye on them at all times. It’s very easy for someone to slip something in. If you left your drink unattended, you should get a new one, just to be on the safe side.
If you want to buy cannabis make sure it’s from a dispensary or somebody you can trust. Don’t take edibles from somebody if they don’t have the original packaging or if they don’t know what dosage it has.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking alcohol can dehydrate you and turn your night into a nightmare. Make sure to drink water in between alcoholic beverages. Your body will thank you later! In the morning, you should seek out drinks with electrolytes, as they can rehydrate your body as well.
Know The Rules
Don’t forget that you’re a student! There are some rules that you have to follow. According to Code 10.05 of RIT’s Housing Terms and Conditions, all RIT housing has quiet hours, which are “11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday.” Be aware of that if you’re hosting a get-together in your dorm or getting home late.
Code 13.02 strictly prohibits the consumption of alcoholic beverages in dorms. Students of age are allowed to consume alcoholic beverages in their on-campus apartments. The consumption of cannabis is banned all over campus regardless of age. Violating those rules will result in a student conduct process.
