"We were the only undefeated team in the history of RIT," said 1955 alumnus Ross DiBiase. In the final three years that RIT athletes called themselves Techmen, DiBiase captained the RIT Wrestling squad. Several members of that team have already made it into the RIT Athletics Hall of Fame; now it's DiBiase's turn, along with five other athletes.

Every year for 44 years, RIT Athletics has inducted a handful of players into its Hall of Fame. This October, six former college athletes will be recognized. The 2013 inductees vary in age and sport, but they have their athletic excellence in common.

“Mandatory attendance policy” is a term that most college students tend to cringe at. In college, most of us students assume that we’ll be treated as adults and we’re told that it is now our duty to manage our priorities, time and life goals entirely on our own. A flexible attendance policy could be a better alternative. Not only could it be applied only to first-year undergraduate students but it could even give leniency for freshman. Some professors may require partial attendance, but instead of absences penalizing the student directly, there could be rewards for attendance instead or just more motivation to attend via the curriculum...

Classes that do not quite “tickle your fancy” are a part of college life. Whether or not you attend those classes is your choice and as long as you do well, who cares, right? Unfortunately for students, the importance of class attendance is subject to each individual professor’s preference. Professors should not implement policies of mandatory classroom attendance. The only thing that is accomplished by forcing students to attend class is the creation of a stagnant classroom environment that nobody wants to be a part of.

College students are adults. As adults they make their own decisions and are accountable for any repercussions of those choices...

Henrietta will be hosting elections for its Town Supervisor on November 4 and 5. RIT students are encouraged to register to vote, even if they live permanantely out of state. If you are interested in registering for this election, be prepared to travel into the city. The mailing registration period for November’s general election ended on October 11. However, voters can still get the chance to register in person at the Board of Elections, located at 39 W. Main Street, Rochester. The Board of Elections is open Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Registration officially ends on October 25...

Linda Keeney, director of communications for RIT’s Office of Development, passed away on October 9 due to illness. Working at RIT since 1994, she’s held a variety of positions. Keeney started as a marketing coordinator for Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies-Civil Engineering Technology Marketing Operations, according to RIT Message Center. She also worked as the associate director of annual giving in the Development and Alumni Relations Division and as the senior director of The Fund for RIT, which she has been a part of since 2001...

Every year, Black Friday atrocities are reported. According to Latinos Post, in 2012 two individuals were shot in outside of a Walmart in Tallahassee, Fla.. In 2011, over 20 shoppers, including children, were injured at a Walmart in Los Angeles after another shopper sprayed pepper spray, according to USA Today. The Daily mail reported in 2010 that a man was trampled in a Target in Buffalo, NY. This list goes on.

It’s no secret that Black Friday is dangerous to the shoppers that are involved. What I want to talk about is the poor and unethical treatment of the thousands of individuals who are forced (and when I say forced I do mean it) to work on Black Friday every year...

The Henrietta Town Supervisor position is up for local election, and the two candidates, the incumbent Michael Yudelson and the GOP candidate Jack Moore, have the potential to greatly impact Henrietta residents and the RIT student population.

During his six years in the position, Yudelson has worked to make the Henrietta Town Hall more transparent by creating a welcoming atmosphere in town meetings, revamping the town’s website and social media, as well as making it easier for the public to access records. For instance, the minutes for Town Hall meetings are now available online...

This year marks the second consecutive year for “Thought at Work,” an event where students from different schools and different backgrounds can display their work in Industrial Design and gain insight on their portfolios.

This year, Thought at Work will be incorporating New Media Design majors in the conference as well. “When you think of design, you have the real world applications, and then there’s the digital side to things,” commented Sheth. “Take your phone for example, you have the physical hardware of it, and then there’s the digital component which the phone runs on. On September 27, RIT’s Student Government (SG) selected its Freshman Senator, Jill Petersen. As the Freshman Senator, Peterson will be representing the freshman class on all issues that come before the senate, as well as working for the freshman class on individual projects and issues.

Peterson is a first year CIAS student. Unlike most incoming freshmen, Peterson has extensive college experience, which she believes will aid her in representing her class. Peterson entered RIT with 60 credits because she was part of a program that allowed her to take the last two years of her high school classes at the University of North Texas...

Sarah Szybist, a first year Biomedical Sciences major, has all the makings to be a great volleyball player, according to her head coach Jim Lodes. Her height (she's 6'1") and quick movements allow her to excel as a blocker and an attacker. The Liberty League seems to agree, having recently recognized Szybist for five consecutive weeks, a feat that Szybist described as “shocking.”  

 

The Liberty League is a member of the NCAA’s Division III. The league includes ten schools and hosts championships in 26 different sports, including volleyball...

Rochester Mayoral Democratic Primary Leaves General Election Outcome Unclear

About a month ago, the President of Rochester City Council, Lovely Warren, carried a victory in the Mayoral Democratic Primary against the incumbent mayor, Thomas Richards. The margin of victory was 57 percent to Warren and 42 percent to Richards, according to the Rochester City Newspaper. There was a much lower voter turnout than was expected, with only 23 percent of registered voters participating.
